U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell stood Friday afternoon in the expansive donated storefront in Regency Square Mall urging people in Jacksonville to sign up for the Affordable Care Act.

As of Jan. 16, almost 1.3 million people in Florida have signed up for health care insurance or were reenrolled in the two months since open enrollment began, according to HHS statistics. The open enrollment period for 2015 ends Feb. 15.

Viktor El-Saieh, executive director of the Northeast Florida Epilepsy Foundation chapter, said the enrollment has gone well locally, with no computer signup issues to report. He credited the management of the mall for donating the space in Regency for a local signup effort that is being run with the help of partnership of local service providers.

“Basically, all we pay is the light bill,” he said of the storefront center.

People can find out more about the signup process by going online to Healthcare.gov, calling 1-800-318-2596 or visiting the center in the Regency Square Mall located near J.C. Penney.
