I have Epilepsy, Epilepsy Does Not Have Me
This is Brittany. She is 22 years old and has been with Epilepsy Alliance Florida EAF since she was 17 years old. After moving out and returning to Florida at the age of 21, she found herself battling her Epilepsy every day. She struggles with it because after moving back to Florida on her own, she did not know who to rely on. She struggled with caretaking for a senior and even riding her bicycle because she would suddenly go unconscious and wake up at the hospital. The medications for her seizures were not working. When she first arrived to the Palm Beach office of Epilepsy Alliance Florida, she spoke with – now her case manager, Sol, who discussed what options were available for her. Brittany and her case manager quickly tried to get her seen by one of the partnered neurologist of EFL, her medication was changed, she was provided with a seizure and fall detection app, Seizario, which would notify any of her friends/ case workers if she suffered an seizure and disclosing her location at the time of the episode. Because her seizures are less frequent, the app is going off less and that is reassuring to her family and friends. She now has free access to her medication as well. Brittany mentions that among many of the things mentioned, EAF also assisted her with access to transportation, resources and support groups where she has met people and have kept in contact with. Brittany says she is thankful for the case management team because she now has a stable roof over her head, feels better, and is beginning a new phase in her life where her seizures are more controlled.
